4good workout, great music, but very repetitive.Apr 26, 2007
By YogaGirl
I bought this from another site. You get 2 dvds or 1 mega dvd with the following classes:
1. 10 core moves -30 minutes- beginner
2. fundation - 40 minutes- beginner
3. hottie body- 40 minutes-intermediate level 2
4. abs core - 30 minutes all levels
5. dance sculpt 40 minutes inermediate level 1

The times are as I remember them off the top of my head. This morning I did hottie body and abs core. ALL of the choreography consists of the 10 core moves. She teaches you a routine that revolves around 10 moves and frankly speaking it becomes repetitive. The routines are all basically the same. How many ways can we combine the 10 core moves. The warm up is the same. The cool down is basically the same. She teaches a routine of maybe five steps with a transition step in between and then you repeat the routine over and over again. The steps are very easy. The movement wasn't very fluid to me sort of staccato. Also, you will not need a lot of floor space. Probably 3 steps front and back and enough room right and left to chasse. I wanted more choreography. If you have taken modern dance classes before, you may be quite bored.

I got thru the hottie body with no trouble. The steps are lester horton based. If you have ever seen the Alvin Ailey dance company, you may recognize some of the moves in their elementary form.

I think this set of dvd's is best for people who are completely out of shape and need to start with the beginning class and work their way up to hottie body. I paid a lot of money for this set of classes and the only one that matches my fitness level is the Hottie body workout, the other ones are too easy. I am seriously considering returning the entire set.

I gave it 4 stars because the music is great. It is live percussion and jazz piano. The music matches the movement perfectly. The production quality is excellent. The dancers are regular women. By the way, this is meant for women only.

One more thing. Karen thanks Capezio for the outfits in each class (shameless plug) She introduces the danceres and drummers in every class. The set also comes with a audio cd that I suppose you can use and turn the DVD on mute as I am sure that after a while you will get sick of the teacher talking, which she does a lot of (giving instructions).

I also bought a bonus dvd called Percussive Jam, which I ust finished doing. It does not have a warm-up and clocks in at about 20 minutes for the cardio. It is the same core moves and basically the same choreography only faster and percussion only. To get a longer cardio workout, this is what you have to do. combine classes. Do a warm-up from one class, say dance sculpt and do the cardio from that class combined with the cardio from another class and the cool down. That way you get about 40 minutes of cardio. 20 minutes isn't enough if you are already fit.

If you want a lower body workout, there is another dvd for that.
The best class on the set is the abs core. It is tough especially the coccyx (sp) balance. Couldn't complete this.

Oh one more thing. The actual cardio time comes in at about 20 minutes. Of course I didn't know that but I should have figured that out as the infocommercial says "get in shape in only 20 minutes a day" So If you add the warm-up and cool down about 20 minutes, the abs which is 30 mintues, you get a full workout. Like I said add more cardio from the other classes for a deeper sweat. Too bad she didn't come up with a matrix like Shiva Rea so you could mix and match classes.

Jury is still out on this one. I sweated but didn't really enjoy it that much. I think you can get bored with this real fast. I have 30 days to decide whether or not to send it all back. I ordered the lower body to see if I like that one so that I can have a complete workout. UPDATE: I decided that the original set of dvds were not worth all the money I spent. I have sent them all back. Just not my cup of tea and I love dance classes. I bought the Lester Horton advanced beginner dance dvd and I like it a lot. This set of dvds were not challenging enough for me if I can get thru the work out the first time around with no trouble.

What I think happened with the choreography is that JB Berns, the man behind Karen Gayle, watered down the 'live' version of this dance class that Karen Gayle teaches in New York. I am willing to bet that if you took this class live , you would love it. But for me, it didn't translate well to dvd. He watered it down too much to suit the masses. What a shame! I know that New Yorkers,(being one myself) would not stand for such repetitive boring dance classes. Maybe she should come out with a 'live' dvd. I'd buy that!

3YogaGirl wrote an excellent reviewMay 21, 2007
By Touch Remedy "TouchRemedy"
I couldn't have wrote a better one myself. I agree 100% that the idea was there, the video preview on the site looked good, but this only 5 moves workout was too BORING. It's one thing if it's complex dance moves that takes practice, but these are easy simple moves & oohhh BORING!

The idea live music of the 2 percussion guys was great, but the beat was too slow/mild for me to be inspired to move. Karen Gayle on camera seems like a sweet person, friendly, very knowledgeable about anatomy when teaching the moves on the dvds, good body awareness, but her over theatrical "and let's start in 5,4,3,2,1... let's go AND 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND let's keep going AND 4 AND 5 AND 6....." slow pace.... She does speak A LOT in between sets as well as during the moves. Teaching about moves, contraindications, etc. is good, saying "hey, think about those high heels in your closet...." oyyy sounds so shallow...

When ordering by phone with the computer operator, they ask you to buy sooo much, for only $15 more, you can have it shipped with 5 days or something, for another $20 you can buy... for another $20 you can buy..... so be careful or order by computer or here.

The learning 10 core-centric moves, fun-dation, dance sculpt, hottie body... all way too easy, boring too me & didn't like the moves.

The core abs is mostly just the usual crunches & yoga boat pose, the only moves I liked was laying on your back, then leaning on your forearms, lifting/lowering your crossed legs at the ankles or even better, switching your crossed ankles so left on top, right on top while holding the legs up. Having you lean on your elbows is a better workout then just laying down.

The lengthening lunges is a mix of a lot of plies, squats, lunges. The only move I liked was a very deep curtsy you repeat about 16x.

The Floor moves for the lower body s done mostly on your back, more about stretching, ballet moves & leg lifts. There is one move I like which is isometic pulling your raise straight leg back down while your arms try to pull it up & reverse those directions. The only other is a deep soas stretch which is done like the yoga hero pose with only one kne bent in front of you & then circle & lay on your back.

The pace of these workouts is like YogaGirl said.... slow, easy with breaks almost as long as each workout move is in between every move. A bit too easy for even me. These dvds I agree with YogaGirl are best for those out of shape or getting back into exercising.

You can see previews at deantedance com or other sites they sell the dvds.

5Deante Dance is funJun 09, 2007
By Jan "Jan (Plainview, NY)"
I have bought many exercise and fitness videos in the past and I have become bored with the same routines. I was looking for something different and new to try, and I found Deante Dance. I am very happy with the results. After just a few weeks, I see my body getting toned and my clothes are feeling looser. That is really keeping up my motivation. What I really enjoy about Deante is that it is different from the basic exercise videos. You feel like you are dancing, while using your muscles and burning off calories. The dance instructor Karen teaches the moves and she is very easy to understand. I was dancing after the first try. The music is great and the beat keeps me moving. I have been using these DVDs almost every morning and now it is my routine. I recommend these DVDs highly to anyone that wants to get a good work out while they are dancing. It's a lot of fun and already I'm losing weight and seeing a difference.

5SO MUCH FUN!Dec 04, 2008
By AlwaysLearning "Happy2Be"
There are many reasons that I enjoy this workout:

1. The pace of the live, cool jazz music. I like the feeling and the way the musicians responded to the dance movements. I do not like frenetic paced workouts.

2. The easy, effective dance movements. I do not like a lot of intricate steps in my workouts. I like the way Karen Gayle picked up the pace instead of adding intricate movements.

3. This is a whole-body TONING dance workout that is easy but will make you SWEAT! Nice warm-ups and cool-downs. Beginners and overweight folks can do this.

4. The cueing of the instructor, Karen Gayle was excellent. She seems knowledgeable and I appreciated the diversity in the her class. Her voice was pleasant. I hope she does more DVDs.

5. It is a good deal. You get 2 DVDs with a total of 6 workouts plus 6 separate "core movement" sections where JB Bearns and Karen explain the movements you will be making in the following workout.

The the dance studio setting was very classy.

I am really happy with this purchase!
