Acceptable - But put your money into a new LED flashlight insteadJan 22, 2011
By Spiced Rum - Bottom Line - I wanted this conversion kit to a) get a tail cap switch for one-handed operation and b) a brighter light than the old Maglite light bulb.
It works acceptably, but you may want to put the money into a new LED flashlight because it does neither tail cap switch or LED brightness very well.
---
- Specific points - Regarding the lumens (aka brightness) here are my thoughts. One disclaimer, I don't own an expensive meter or test equipment to measure lumen output, so I am doing this by "eye" against a standard background. a) The LED is noticeably brighter than the old standard Maglite incandescent light bulb. b) However, it is not as bright as a new Maglite LED 2xAA version.
From what I could find, if you want a tail cap switch for the Maglite 2xAA, you have two choices. a) This page you're looking at (the LUC2) or b) This other product (NIQ2)
The LUC2: - This LUC2 product's tail cap switch is kind of cheesy. The cap has no rubber seal to avoid liquid or dirt. It also "feels" kind of loose. I have used other flashlights and their tail cap switches seem more solid. - The tail cap doesn't have a lanyard hole. A lanyard can be handy in my opinion. - Does provide "momentary on". That is: press switch slightly and the light comes on, but release and it goes off. You don't have to press entirely to turn it on and entirely to turn it off. There are times when I want to turn it on and off quickly and I didn't want the switch to be a hindrance. I like this switch for this feature. - This switch can be accidentally switched "on" quite easily.
The NIQ2: My dad has this one, and the tail cap slowly blinks dim red continuously when it is electrically connected so you can find it in the dark. Great if you want this, not so great if you don't want constant blinking. To stop the red blinking, you could turn off the electrical connection by twisting the Maglite's focus adjustment, but then you can't turn the light on one-handed with the tail cap switch. This kind of defeats the whole one-handed option.
Finally, here are two other (bright) flashlight options with an LED and a tail cap switch. Very nice enhancementJan 22, 2008
By Wayne Rambo The conversion kit is very simple to change. The only drawback I noticed was you lose a lot of the focusing capability. The extra brightness makes up for that most of the time.

Bright little suckerDec 06, 2010

I previously bought the Nite-Ize LED AA Maglite replacement without the switch and was very impressed with the brightness. This unit was the same except it came with the tail-cap switch, which I elected not to use since it works great with the standard Maglite turn-to-activate. The brightness is really impressive - you really can't look at it directly. I would have preferred to purchase only the LED for a bit less money, but this combo package was worth the price, it included free shipping and the product worked great.

By 3589 I received the product promptly. I found it easy to install. The light produced is very good and having an on-off switch is a nice improvement. I like the product.

good upgradeNov 23, 2010
By M. Miller this is a good upgrade to my mini mag and it has a good spot light feel to it now the push button makes it a lot easier to use. so if you carry or use a mini mag alot like I do then this is a good little upgrade worth getting.
